Homeless help

Dear Editor,
I was appalled and saddened to read about a 32-year-old homeless man named Akeem Loney who was stabbed in the neck and killed while sleeping aboard a northbound 2 train near Penn Station.
He was reportedly a gifted soccer player who was trying to get his life together. Transit crime is up, and something needs to be done to protect the riding public and homeless.
Loney was reportedly a gifted soccer player who was trying to get his life together. I can relate.
I was homeless in 1975 after the Vietnam War after serving in the United States Navy. I was in a shelter called Middle Earth in Hempstead, and got help from the people I met there.
In reality, many others are not so lucky. I offer my heartfelt prayers to all the homeless who are suffering, mentally and physically. I truly feel their pain because I was there.
Sincerely,

Good luck Eric!

Dear Editor,
Congratulations to mayor-elect Eric Adams. We all need to offer our support for the incoming mayor, even if we did not vote for him.
Adams will have a lot on his plate. He has many issues to address, like crime and guns on the street, affordable housing, homelessness, mental health issues, rising food costs, vaccine mandates, and much more.
Adams is a blue-collar worker who fully understands the problems of the poor and the issues facing the common men and women of this great city. As a retired captain of the NYPD, I think he will support our Finest.
I hope he succeeds for the good of us all.
Sincerely,
Frederick R. Bedell, Jr.

Mandatory vaccinations

Dear Editor,
Our essential workers are essential to our city, but so are vaccinations to keep us all safe.
I am 72 years old and my wife is 68, and we both have had all three of the Pfizer vaccinations and our flu shots. Why do we do this? Because we don’t want to get sick or die.
Our first responders and essential workers who don’t want to get vaccinated will endanger us all. They are being very selfish.
This mandate by the city is not about personal rights, but about spreading COVID-19. We can stop the spread but only if we all get vaccinated.
Sincerely,
Frederick R. Bedell, Jr.
Bellerose,

Beam me up

Dear Editor,
William Shatner finally had the opportunity to blast off into space, and at 90 years old becoming the oldest to have done so.
As a senior citizen myself of 72 years old, I am proud of his achievement. In the 1970s, I attended a Star Trek Convention and got to meet William Shatner.
There is much trouble in our world, and I think if the character Captain Kirk came to visit earth from the 24th century, he might say, “Scotty beam me up, there’s no intelligent life here. ”
Sincerely,
Frederick R. Bedell, Jr.

Mentally speaking

Dear Editor
Anthonia Egregbara, who is accused of pushing a woman into an arriving subway at Times Square, is reportedly mentally ill and has been arrested a number of times for attacking others over the last ten years.
She was repeatedly released because of reformed bail laws. Why was this woman allowed to walk the streets without being treated for her condition?
We have many people like Egregbara who are mentally ill and a danger to the riding public. More needs to be done to help the mentally ill from hurting themselves and others.
Sincerely,
Frederick R. Bedell, Jr.

Young guns

Dear Editor,
Twenty-one children between the ages of 13 and 17 were killed in shootings and stabbings this year in New York City. The number of shootings of children under the age of 18 has risen to 105. This has to stop!
We need to bring back “stop and Frisk” to take guns off the street, bring back anti-gang units, and have more youth programs. Parents should not have to bury their child.
The mayor and the NYPD need to stop the killing of our youth. So far, Mayor Bill de Blasio has dropped the ball.
Sincerely,
Frederick R. Bedell, Jr.

Stop Stop & Shop

Dear Editor
It has come to my attention that Stop & Shop in Little Neck will close on October 14.
My wife and I shopped at Stop & Shop for ten years when we lived in Little Neck. We moved to Bellerose a number of years ago, but still shop at Stop & Shop when in Little Neck.
I feel for the shoppers in Little Neck, especially senior citizens who depend on Stop & Shop. There are a number of residents who don’t have a car and depend on local supermarkets.
Many seniors will have to take buses or taxis to other supermarkets, which they might not be able to afford.
What an insult to be left without a local supermarket. My heart also goes out to all the workers of Stop & Shop in Little Neck who are losing their jobs.
This is a great loss for the people of Little Neck. People need access to healthy food, especially during this pandemic.
Stop & Shop is making a great mistake by shutting this store, I hope they change their mind.
Sincerely,
Frederick R. Bedell, Jr.

Get tested

Dear Editor,
September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, and he pandemic has caused many men to avoid getting tested for prostate cancer. Now is the time to get tested.
About one in nine men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime. According to the American Cancer Society, there will be 248,530 new cases and 31,130 deaths from prostate cancer in 2021.
Prostate cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer deaths, but it is 99 percent curable if caught early. I know that only too well.
I was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2015. I was having knee surgery and needed a physical by my primary doctor, who found my PSA was high and directed me to see a urologist.
At age 66, I had aggressive prostate cancer and required surgery. Today, I am 72 years-old and cancer free. These doctors truly saved my life and I am eternally thankful.
I urge all men over the age of 40 to get tested.
Sincerely,
Frederick R. Bedell, Jr.

Driven insane

Dear Editor,
A reckless driver in Clinton Hill killed a three-month-old girl and left her mother critically injured. The car the killer was driving had 160 traffic violations associated with it.
Why was Tyrik Mott still behind the wheel? I am truly appalled and troubled about the many careless drivers out there who just don’t care.
A number of years ago, an 86-year-old neighbor and his dog were killed while crossing the street in Glen Oaks Village.
I’m a senior citizen and often worry about crossing the street. I believe more must be done to punish those who drive carelessly.
Sincerely,
Frederick R. Bedell, Jr.

Remember FDNY

Dear Editor,
We must not forget the 343 firefighters who died at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, trying to save lives. We must also remember those firefighters who survived, but died years later from various diseases, as well as those who are now ill from their rescue efforts at Ground Zero.
Please keep in your prayers these brave firefighters who go into danger with dedication, courage and a desire to save lives.
Sincerely,
Frederick R. Bedell Jr.
