Russia aggression

Dear Editor,
The recent buildup of Russian troops and military equipment along the border with Ukraine certainly must be considered a potential flashpoint for an escalating military confrontation.
How far will NATO be willing to go to support Ukraine should Russia decide to send troops across the border?
Officially, Ukraine is not yet a member of NATO, although it is pushing to become one. Russia is playing a very dangerous political and military game of roulette, and Putin should think twice before launching an attack on Ukraine.
This situation could potentially be a flashpoint for a major conflict, one that nobody really wants to see occur. Diplomacy and tact must be used to resolve this tense situation.
Sincerely,
John Amato

Variant fears

Dear Editor,
The recent news about a new variant of COVID-19 discovered in South Africa is very worrisome news. We cannot allow this variant to spread across the globe, which will certainly cause a resurgence in infections, hospitalizations and deaths, especially if the current vaccines and boosters are not as protective against it.
Will we ever be able to rid the world of COVID? According to most medical experts, that will not happen. Instead, the virus will diminish in spread and intensity and become endemic like the flu, and will require a yearly vaccine.
COVID19 has really turned everyone’s lives topsy turvy.
Sincerely,
John Amato

Safe holidays

Dear Editor,
This holiday season many more people will gather to celebrate with family and friends. But they have to be sure they are vaccinated and not gather in large groups without masks.
The holidays can be celebrated safely, and we cannot allow COVID to indefinitely stop us from living our lives.
Sincerely,

Why go back?

Dear Editor,
Many office buildings in Manhattan remain mostly vacant due to COVID-19. The continued reluctance of many office workers to return to the city is going to be a longterm effect that will cause economic problems for the city.
Many workers prefer to continue working from the safety of their homes, and who can blame them? This city is not very safe right now.
It is going to take many months for anything resembling pre-pandemic normalcy to ever return to Manhattan, and that is indeed very sad for a once great, vibrant and exciting city.
Sincerely,

Support our vets

Dear Editor,
As the nation prepares to celebrate Veteran’s Day next week, Americans should all be grateful for the sacrifices these brave men and women have made in the past and continue to make for our nation.
Our veterans need our support now more than ever, and government must help them and their families. Instead of worrying so much about the illegal immigrants who continue to cross into our country, the government should be taking care of our veterans.
Thank you for your bravery, service and dedication protecting this country.
Sincerely,

Consensus needed

Dear Editor,
As world leaders convene in Scotland for the climate change summit, what will actually be accomplished?
Climate change continues to affect the globe with catastrophic results, including floods in Europe, China, Italy and India, wild fires burning in the western U. S., Greece, and Turkey, another very active Atlantic hurricane season, and record heat at the Arctic circle.
All of these ominous warning signs cannot continue to be ignored by the world. Hopefully, there will be some type of consensus reached.
This planet belongs to all nations, therefore it is the responsibility of every nation of the world to work on reducing fuel emissions.
Sincerely,

Detail details

Dear Editor,
Once again, Mayor Bill de Blasio has done something illogical and unethical. During his inane presidential campaign, which was the biggest joke of the century, he had a police detail drive his family around.
If he wanted to do that, he should have hired a private security service and pay out of his own pocket. That money should be returned to the police department immediately.
If he refuses to repay it, then he should be sued by the city. De Blasio thinks he can do whatever he pleases, but he has been nothing but a thorn in our city’s side since the day he took office. It will be indeed a pleasure to see him leaving at the end of this year.
Sincerely,
John Amato

Different day

Dear Editor,
Columbus Day is now also called Indigenous People’s Day. Why can’t that holiday be on a different day?
If people want this additional holiday, then it should be celebrated on a different day, not on October 11. We Italian Americans are proud of celebrating Columbus Day, and nothing should ever change that.
Sincerely,

Plant a tree

Dear Editor,
Trees are a very vital part of our ecosystem. Their root systems retain soil, they take in CO2, and give off oxygen. They also reduce outside temperatures by several degrees in the summer, helping to cool our city streets.
More trees need to be planted across our country to help stem the tide of climate change. Plant a tree on your property, you will contribute to improving the ecosystem. We must do all we can to preserve life on our planet, and planting trees is one way to do that

Booster bozos

Dear Editor,
The FDA’s decision to limit distribution of booster shots to people 65 and older is ridiculous. I am 62 years old, and my wife is 66, which means she can get it but I can’t.
I have aortic stenosis with a 50 percent blockage in the artery leading to the aortic valve of my heart. I need to also receive this booster, but thanks to the asinine decision made by the FDA, I will not be able to receive this shot.
Anyone 16 or older should be permitted to get this important booster shot.
Sincerely,
John Amato
