Community Editor: Jack Delaney

Hello reader! My name is Jack, and I’m the community editor of the Brooklyn Downtown Star and Greenpoint Star. I began writing journalism at The New Journal, Yale’s oldest long form magazine, where I fell in love with telling stories about the issues that bind a city’s residents together. From there, I worked at the nonprofit newsroom San José Spotlight out in California, and helped run the book review quarterly Brink!

I’m thrilled to be continuing to hone my craft as a reporter for the Star, for two reasons. First, I grew up here: I’ve lived in Carroll Gardens for 16 years, and I love this borough. Second, this is a precarious time for local news, and I wholeheartedly believe that the world would be worse off without newspapers like the Star, which has been serving Brooklynites since 1841 — an incredible 184 years. Studies show that when local news dries up, corruption rises and neighbors become less likely to engage with each other. At this moment in history, it’s more important than ever to have news and commentary that offer a mirror to the borough, and connect its many disparate players — artists, small biz owners, students, scientists, and more — to one another.

To do that, though, I need to hear from you, our honorable reader! Please don’t hesitate to reach out to my email (jdelaney@queensledger.com) with any tips, or feedback about the sorts of stories you’d like to see.
