12-0 win clinches Northeast Division for Queensboro

A remarkable 12-0 win by Queensboro FC II secured a division title in the first ever USL Academy League season, sending them to the top of the Northeast and into the postseason. Just weeks after a 9-0 thrashing of Pathfinder FC, the first-year club set a division record with a dozen goals in a single match.
QBFC went into the match with a 9-1-1 record, just three points shy of division leaders AC Connecticut. A win would put them level with ACC, but one by a large enough margin would be enough to surpass the +36 goal difference. Knowing what was at stake, Queensboro FC took care of things inside the first half.
All the action seemed to stay inside the Morris Elite half as QBFC attacked and pressed mercilessly. Their runs behind the defense were unstoppable, and the few that Morris Elite halted were whistled for penalties. Heading into halftime, the lead was already 6-0, but Queensboro FC wasn’t ready to sit back.
At the break, it was right back to business as the coaching staff pointed out flaws in the team’s transition back to defense, looking to hold onto another clean sheet. Determined to hold the lead and expand on it, Queensboro FC took the pitch for the second half.
Once again a barrage of goals found the back of the net as QBFC pinned Morris Elite back inside their half. The attacking players got more creative and free with less pressure on them, leading to daring crosses and quick runs behind the defense.
By the time the final whistle blew, Queensboro FC had put the finishing touches on a wild 12-0 victory, crowning them division champions. Matthews Tejeda and Joel Favard each recorded a hat trick, with four others finding the net: Nikolas Vidal, Piero Elias, Damien Barker, and Nestor Cabrera.
As the season continues, the growth of the club has been remarkable to watch. What began as a promising club has turned into an incredibly lethal offense and airtight defense, a perfect first season for the club to establish their style of play.
“It feels great because what we wanted to work on was finishing the opportunities we create on the field,” said Academy head coach Diego Gomez. “When we see the team playing that way and getting the ball in the net, it makes us happy as coaches.”
Now with a ticket punched to the playoffs, QBFC will put their skills to the biggest test of the year as they prepare to take on other division champions from across the country. Before heading to Tampa Bay, Queensboro FC will wrap up their regular season with a pair of home games at Deborah and John Danzi Stadium at St Joseph’s College on Long Island. They will host Black Rock FC on October 16th before playing Pathfinder FC on the 27th.
While the title is clinched, Queensboro FC won’t take the final matches lightly as they prepare for the tournament. Additionally, just six more goals in their next two will give them the best goal difference, most goals scored, and least goals conceded in league play.
“We have the mentality to win every week, and that’s why we are celebrating today. We’re going to approach these games with the same mentality that we had today and last week,” assured Gomez. “We want to win both, keep clean sheets, and our objective to get the most goals in the league.”
It may just be year one, but Queensboro FC is showing exactly what team they want to be, and the growth of the academy club is just the start with the senior team set to debut in 2022.
