What makes Dominican Academy a Top High School? Dominican Academy is dedicated to academic excellence and community building through study, prayer, and action. In the tradition of St. Dominic, its intellectual and spiritual program guides and challenges students to seek truth and justice in their world and to make meaningful contributions to society.
This year, Dominican Academy celebrates its 125th jubilee. Since its founding in 1897, Dominican Academy has consistently ranked among the premier Catholic high schools in both New York City and the United States.
Located in an historic mansion on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, Dominican Academy (D.A.) unites academic rigor with a warm, family-like atmosphere. Sponsored by the Dominican Sisters of Peace, D.A. stands alone as the only all-honors high school for young women in New York State.
D.A. guides and challenges students to seek truth and justice in their world and to make meaningful contributions to society.
All classes are either Honors or Advanced Placement (A.P.) level. D.A.’s curriculum provides a full college preparatory education from the humanities and language to science and mathematics. Students can choose from over 20 elective courses, such as Civil Rights in America, Intro to Modern Art, and Intro to Computer Programming.
As a Roman Catholic school in the tradition of St. Dominic, life at D.A. is built upon the pillars of Study, Community, Just Actions, and Prayer. D.A. sponsors semi-weekly masses in the school’s chapel and several school-wide masses throughout the year.
In addition, students in all grades participate in annual service and retreats as part of the Service Learning Program. D.A. students engage in advocacy through service, international solidarity trips, and Senior Social Justice Seminar series co-hosted by brother school, Regis.
There are over 30 student-run clubs including Campus Ministry, Drama Club, Student Council, Culture Club, and more. D.A. partners with the Frick Collection to offer sketching classes taught by museum professionals, at no extra charge.
In addition, the expanded Athletics Program includes intramural Tennis and the following Varsity sports: Basketball, Soccer, Softball, Swimming, Cross Country, Indoor & Outdoor Track, and Volleyball. Student-athletes compete as members of the Catholic High School Athletic Association. Last year, over 40 percent of D.A. students participated in athletics.
