New York City, get ready to help pay for cleaning the Gowanus Canal. You too, U.S. Navy and National Grid.

The city, Navy, and energy company are on a shortlist of potentially responsible parties the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has reason to believe could be liable to pay for a Superfund cleanup of the Gowanus Canal.

All three were recently notified by the EPA, the Star has learned.

Also making the list were Consolidated Edison, another energy company, and Chemtura Corporation, a chemical manufacturer.

An EPA spokesperson said the five entities that received notice/information request letters won’t necessarily be the only ones footing the bill if the canal undergoes a Superfund cleanup.

The agency also sent information request letters to 20 other entities whose properties might have contributed to polluting the canal, said the spokesperson, Elizabeth Totman. These include corporations as diverse as Exxon Mobil, Kraft Foods, and Citigroup, among others, a copy of the list shows.

Totman said the companies under consideration have been asked to detail past dealings with hazardous materials. “We’re just trying to gather information,” Totman said.

In an email, a city official said the city is reviewing the EPA’s letter.
