The St. John’s softball team dropped the final game of the Texas A&M Invitational to the Aggies, 5-1, at Davis Diamond on Sunday.

In all, the Red Storm went 2-3 on the weekend.

Freshman Erin Brown and the St. John’s (2-8) defense shut down the Aggies in the opening two frames. In the bottom of the first, the Johnnies’ rookie forced a ground ball to Gretchen Bowie at third, who turned a 5-6-3 double play to help the Red Storm get out of the opening frame unscathed.

The Aggies (8-3) continued to put the pressure on Brown in the bottom half of the second inning. She worked herself into a second and third, one-out situation, only to force a pair of groundouts to keep the home team off of the board.

Texas A&M tagged the Johnnies with a two-spot in the third frame, but once again the defense kept Texas A&M from breaking the game open.

The Red Storm finally broke through after forcing Aggies’ starter Kendall Potts to put runners on base in each of the first four innings. Bowie worked a two-out walk in the top of the fourth frame, only to be driven in on a Kalei Sorensen double to the right-center gap, cutting the St. John’s deficit to one, 2-1.

After a scoreless fifth frame, Kayla Kmett had not allowed a hit since entering the game in the third, retiring seven-straight batters in nearly three innings of action.

Texas A&M put up three runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 5-1 advantage before closing the game out in the seventh.

St. John’s will return to Texas next weekend when the team heads to Beaumont for Lamar’s Cardinal Classic beginning on February 21.
