The St. John’s softball team completed a sweep of Creighton on Sunday afternoon, defeating the Bluejays 8-7 in Omaha.

The Red Storm (18-16, 7-1 Big East) outscored Creighton, 29-16, while the teams combined for nine home runs in three games. St. John’s batted .301 with a .639 slugging percentage and a .416 on-base percentage.

The Johnnies have won nine of its last 10 contests against Bluejays (11-17, 1-8).

Of the nine dingers hit this weekend, Christina Melendez smashed three of them, including one in each contest. She hit a two-run shot in the fifth inning of the final game to put the Red Storm up by seven.

Deuces ran wild for freshman Peyton Cody as she paced St. John’s lineup with a pair of hits, runs and RBIs in the Johnnies’ 18th win of the season. One of her two hits was a solo shot that eventually sealed the game for the Red Storm.

She also led the team over the three-game set, batting .545 with six hits and eight RBIs.

Juniors Marissa Rizzi and Gretchen Bowie recorded six runs each, combining for 12 of the Red Storm’s 29 runs.

The Red Storm returns home for a midweek match against Manhattan on Wednesday, April 10, before heading to Seton Hall for a series beginning on April 13.

CODY, MORRIS HONORED

Freshman Cody and senior Madison Morris were named to the Big East Weekly Honor Roll.

This marks the first time that two Johnnies have been selected to the conference accolade since March 12, 2018, when Morris and reigning Big East Player of the Year Krystal Puga were tabbed after the Colorado State Classic.

Cody makes program history with her third conference honor roll of the season, becoming the only freshman to be selected to the weekly award more than twice.

In the past four games, she has tallied a team-high 12 RBIs, including her first grand slam of the season against LIU Brooklyn.

Following her power swing against the Blackbirds, Cody recorded her second-straight four-RBI game and delivered a pair of two-run hits to lift the Red Storm in the opening game of the Creighton series.

She also extended her hitting streak to 14 while registering an RBI in eight straight games.

Morris shut down the Creighton lineup all weekend to pick up her second honor roll of the season and sixth of her career. She posted a 2-0 record with a 3.27 ERA and 22 strikeouts, while holding the Bluejays to a .271 batting average.

In game one, she threw a complete game in the Red Storm’s 12-2 victory in six innings, registering her fourth-straight contest with 10 or more strikeouts (11).

The senior right-hander recorded her first save of the season in the following game, tossing two hitless innings along with four punchouts.

Morris finished the sweep of the Bluejays with a complete game, seven-strikeout victory to earn her 12th win of the season.

The St. John’s ace paces the conference in strikeouts (139), innings pitched (125.2), and is undefeated against conference opponents this season (5-0).
