Dear Editor,

A friend of mine recently visited Battery Park and noticed a heavy militarized police presence, both there and at Penn Station. However, despite all the political hype post-9/11, I resent police toting military-style weapons in public places as intimidation and dangerous.

It is certain that the cause of this local militarized police phenomenon is the status of America as a target of Islamic jihadists. Americans have been targeted because of interventionist foreign policies vis-a-vis Israel and the Middle East, a fascination of post-19th century America with commercial, financial, ideological and military intervention in Asia.

However, I do not hear this scenario in the Rodgers & Hart tune “Manhattan,” with lyrics like "The city's clamor can never spoil the dreams of a boy and goil/We'll turn Manhattan into an isle of joy."

I hear nothing of police in military and riot gear on subway platforms in those lyrics. If you want an America free of this Third Reich mentality, vote for neither Hillary nor Trump.
