Free community college is a good idea

Last week, President Barack Obama announced that he would soon propose a plan that would make the first two years of community college free for everyone who is willing to work for it.

We say that this is an idea whose time has come, and one that will greatly contribute to the success of future generations of Americans as they enter an increasingly competitive marketplace.

One of the most pressing issues facing young adults today is college debt. And those who never accrue that debt are in many ways even worse off, unable to successfully stratify and attain a position that pays a true living wage.

By making the first two years of community college free for those who earn their way through, both of those problems could be significantly alleviated for so many young Americans who were not fortunate enough to be born into homes with enough wealth to support a four-year college education.

Of course, for such a program to come to fruition, the first question that comes to mind is, who is going to pay for this? One solution could be a new, minimal income tax for college graduates that would see them paying for the cost of their own free education.

Regardless of how it is paid for, the bottom line is that our economy as a whole stands to benefit from an initiative that would see more of our citizens receiving higher education.

We hope leaders on both sides of the aisle can come together to negotiate a workable piece of legislation to make this a reality.
