Celebrating Senior Day, the St. Joseph’s College women’s soccer team downed Washington Adventist University, 5-2, on Sunday at Aviator Sports and Events Center. Fresh off of Wednesday’s 15-0 victory, the Lady Bears (10-3) looked to stay in the win column on a day they celebrated the careers of seniors Shannon Rom (Breezy Point/Bishop Kearney), Daniela Semilia (Brooklyn/Bishop Kearney), Melissa Maloy (Staten Island/St. John Villa) and Nicole Farinella (East Patchogue/Bellport) in their final home games in a Lady Bears uniform. But Washington Adventist (1-6) jumped on St. Joseph’s early. They opened the scoring in the 7th minute off of an unassisted goal by Aaliyah Payton. Before Shannon Fahy (Breezy Point,/Bishop Kearney) leveled the game with her 19th goal of the season in the 15th minute. Four minutes later, the Shock put the Lady Bears back in a hole on a Karis Powell strike. After twenty minutes of scoreless play, the Lady Bears turned the tide by netting two quick goals in the space of three minutes. First, in the 39th minute, Cansu Usta (Brooklyn/Fort Hamilton) put away her NCAA-leading 31st goal of the season helped by a midfield cross from Rom. Shortly after, Pamela Chernyakhovsky (Brooklyn/Leon M. Goldstein) gave St. Joseph’s a 3-2 lead heading into intermission and the Lady Bears never trailed again. The Lady Bears rode the momentum into the second half. Helped by Chernyakhovsky’s sideline cross Rom scored on Senior Day less than 10 minutes into the second half. The Lady Bears maintained the two-goal lead for the remainder of the period, but with just seconds remaining, Suzanne Nordbo (Brooklyn/Fontbonne Hall) took advantage of the Shock’s desperate offense and netted her first career goal, sealing St. Joseph’s 5-2 victory. St. Joseph’s maintained a 25-15 shot differential for the contest and Farinella made nine saves to earn the victory in net. The win pushed the Lady Bears to 10-win mark for the first time in program history. Coming off two consecutive victories, the Lady Bears will take on Berkeley College at Aviator Field on Thursday, October 23, at 6:15 p.m. in their HVIAC regular season finale. Men not so lucky The St. Joseph’s men’s soccer team couldn’t send off their seniors with a win on Senior Day, falling behind early and losing 3-1 to No. 8 Washington Adventist University in a United States Collegiate Athletic Association affair at Aviator. The Bears (6-6) entered the contest coming off a two-game winning streak but returned back to the .500 mark on a day celebrating the careers of seniors Michael Miner (Schenevus/Schneveus), Raul Urshela (Orlando/Colonial), Marco Fuentes (Orlando/Timber Creek) and Vinny Rossi (Bayside/Holy Cross). After a slow start from both teams, Samuel Kashai’s breakaway goal down the sideline broke the scoreless tie for the Shock (7-5) in the 21st minute. Ryan Senior extended the Shock’s lead to 2-0 in the 37th minute finishing a feed from Eric Sierra Marrero. Shortly into the second half, St. Joseph’s finally broke through on Beka Goduadze’s (Tbilisi/Lyceum “NK”) 48th minute unassisted goal, his team-leading ninth of the season. In the 56th minute, Kashai powered a free kick through the Bears’ defense, tallying his second goal of the day and extra insurance for the Shock. The Bears would be unable to find the back of the net again, dropping the game 3-1. St. Joseph’s almost matched Adventist in the shot department, 18-16, but were unable to capitalize on scoring chances late in the game. St. Joseph’s currently sits in fourth place in the Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference standings and will now shift their focus to their final two regular season games, both pivotal conference matchups looking to lock up their first tournament berth. First up, the Bears were set to face Berkeley College on the road on Wednesday, October 22, at 6 p.m.
