At least for the time being, I’ve given up on trying to figure out what St John’s team will show up on the court night in and night out.
Last week basically summed up what the 2018-2019 season has been all about: inconsistency.
St John’s answered the bell in their three-game road trip.
They won at Creighton and put together their most impressive win of the year at Marquette, a top-ten team that St. John’s has defeated twice this year.
I wanted to believe St. John’s would parlay that victory into an extended run of wins throughout Big East play.
Not the case after a 14-point home loss to Providence on Saturday.
Still, the Johnnies are on the right side of the NCAA Tournament bubble, for now at least.
To have confidence that this team can make a run deep into the Big East Tournament and even win a couple of games in the Big Dance, I am going to have to see a stretch of consistent winning basketball against solid competition.
This week, St John’s will have a chance to move the needle when Villanova, the reigning national champions, invade Madison Square Garden.
In their final seven Big East games, St John’s will need to go 5-2 if they don’t want to head into the Big East Tournament in a situation that could make the difference as to wether or not they are dancing in March or looking at an invite to the NIT.
It’s time for this talented St. John’s roster to put together a consistent stretch of winning basketball.
Who exactly is this Red Storm group?
The team that beat Marquette twice? Or the team that lost to Depaul, Georgetown and Providence at home.
We’ll find out soon enough.
