A new supermarket chain is coming to the Brooklyn Navy Yard.

Wegmans Food Markets announced it will open on Sunday, October 27, at 7 a.m. on Flushing Avenue in the Admirals Row development.

Although it’s the first Wegmans in New York City, the chain has 99 locations across upstate New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland and Massachusetts.

“The Brooklyn community has been eagerly awaiting the opening date for this store,” said Todd Ferrera, the store’s vice president and district manager. “October 27 is just around the corner, and we can’t wait to celebrate with everyone.”

The chain is now hiring and training for 350 part-time positions, including openings in restaurant foods, sushi, pizza, bakery, produce, deli, cheese, day and overnight grocery departments.

Recruitment for 150 full-time employees began in January and is ongoing. According to the store, Wegmans will employ 500 people, the “vast majority” of whom will be hired locally.

Other available full-time gigs include prep cooks, line cooks, lead cook and customer service positions.

According to Wegmans, the store offers competitive pay and benefits, flexible scheduling and an employee scholarship program.

For 22 consecutive years, the chain has been named one of the “100 Best Companies to Work For” by Fortune Magazine. It ranked third overall in 2019.

“Although the opening is still several months away, new employees begin in-depth training soon after they’re hired so they’re that knowledgeable and fully prepared to deliver incredible customer service,” said store manager Kevin Cuff.

Wegmans Brooklyn will feature 60,000 individual products, more than 4,000 organic products, fresh seafood, and 300 varieties of imported and domestic cheese.

The store will have a second-floor mezzanine with a bar that serves food, wine, beer and spirits.
