Dear Editor,

What I'm about to write may appear trivial, but as a stickler for details I would like to explain my dilemma.

During NBC”s coverage of the 2016 Olympics in Rio, they kept referring to it as the 31st Olympiad of the modern era.

In Ancient Greece, a festival of athletic games was held every four years from 776 B.C. to 393 A.D. on the plain of Olympia in honor of Zeus. An international revival of athletic contests patterned after the Olympic games began in 1896 as was held every four year for the past 120 years.

If this were true, then NBC was correct.

However, after the 11th Olympiad (1936) in Berlin, the 12th was to be held in Tokyo in 1940. The International Olympic Committee cancelled the games because of WWII. In 1944, the 13th Olympiad was also skipped because of the war.

The post-WWII Olympiad was held in London in 1948.

I claim that since the 12th and 13th Olympiads never took place, the London games should be the 12th. Thus, the Rio 2016 Olympics should be the 29th, not the 30th.

If anyone can prove me wrong, please explain your views in a letter to this paper.

Sincerely,

Anthony Pilla
