Msgr. McClancy's Kyle Scheafer and Rhona McCaughey signed letters of intent to play at the next level at a recent ceremony at the East Elmhurst school.

“The top priority for our athletes is to excel in the classroom,” said director of admissions Nick Melito as he introduced the pair and their families to a crowd of about 100. “Not only do these two role models excel in school, but they make us proud on the court and field.”

McCaughey will play basketball at Concordia College in Bronxville. The Maspeth resident played CYO ball at St. Adalberts under coach Lou Pagnotta. She recalled her 28-point effort in the Rose Catholic Tournament last year against Summit Academy.

“McClancy felt like home when I first visited the school at its open house,” she said. “I made a great decision and they supported me through my time here.”

Baseball standout Schaefer, who is also in the honors program at McClanc, will play ball at Division I Marshall University in West Virginia.

The Astoria native played travel baseball under coach Greg Modica with the Midville Dodgers and was voted second team all-city.
