Fears over Trump rally unwarranted

When we got a call early last week from a group who wanted us to know they would be holding a pro-Trump rally in Maspeth Memorial Square, we were concerned.

As a fair-minded newsroom we knew we had to report on it, but worried about possible clashes at the event between Trump supporters and counter-protestors.

No doubt tempers could flare, as the nation is in a state of high-tension partisanship over President Donald Trump.

Any trouble could look bad for Maspeth, a neighborhood that hosts one of the most patriotic Memorial Day parades in the city and has strong civic and business groups always willing to pitch in.

In fact, they chose the spot because they were inspired by the “Maspeth Is America” mural facing the square.

Organizer Tom Zmich assured us it would be a positive rally, and says he asked participants to refrain from holding signs that might cause ire from “the other side” of the aisle.

The police were concerned, as were some community leaders in Maspeth.

However, their concerns were unwarranted when the group of about 100 pulled off the rally without a hitch, and treated their right to gather peacefully as a responsibility to do just that.

Organizers felt good about their event, and kudos to everyone for respecting their right to hold it.
