To assist frontline health care workers who have been caring for patients affected by COVID-19, Borough President Eric Adams stopped by Woodhull Medical and Mental Health Center with meals in hand.

Last Tuesday, Adams teamed up with Bedford-Stuyvesant vegan restaurant Greedi Kitchen to distribute 400 plant-based meals to the hospital staff.

Adams, who transitioned to a plant-based diet years ago, said providing nutritious meals to the health care force is one way to support them and express gratitude for their service.

“The meals we provided today are plant-based because we must protect and maximize the health of our medical caregivers on the frontlines,” he said in a statement. “The immune system is the body’s defense against disease, and plant-based foods provide the vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fiber required to keep that system at its strongest.”

The borough president participated in a recent public service announcement to deliver the message that plant-based foods are effective for preventing chronic health conditions like diabetes, heart disease and obesity.

Those underlying health issues put people at high-risk from COVID-19, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Latisha Daring, owner of Greedi Kitchen, said since the start of the pandemic, physicians, nurses and hospital support staff have been working overtime to care for patients.

“Our health care force continually put themselves second to the care of their patients,” she said. “It is time for us to step up now and help take care of them by providing healthy, plant-based, nourishing foods to support their efforts.”

Michelle Hernandez, director of marketing and communications at Woodhull, expressed her gratitude to Adams and Greedi Kitchen.

“Today meant a great deal to our hospital workers,” Hernandez said.
